How many gifts of the Holy Spirit are there exactly?
This is a confusing question, in part because the word "gifts" gets used in more than once sense.
First of all, you have the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit which we believe are given to all believers. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of God. We receive these gifts at Baptism and stir them up and deepen them through Confirmation.
Another type of gift of the Holy Spirit is a charism, of which there are 26. These are NOT common to all Christians, but unique to each individual. They are found in the New Testament, especially Acts of the Apostles, Corinthians, and Romans, and through the Early Church Fathers. The first 100 years of Church history define these 26 charisms.
The 26 charisms are writing, craftsmanship, encouragement, giving, helps, music, prophecy, discernment, service, administration, knowledge, pastoring, wisdom, faith, leadership, teaching, intercession, celibacy, evangelization, hospitality, healing, voluntary poverty, mercy, missionary, tongues, and interpretation of tongues.
Here at Many Parts, our goal is to help you come to know which of these unique charisms you have been given, starting with our charism assessment. Our assessment and guide leave out two of the 26 charisms - gifts of tongues and interpretation of tongues. We always say that those two charisms are not ones you need a test to know if you have! You can still receive these charisms no matter the other ones you already have.
All in all, the 24 charisms you will find in our assessment and guide are the ones explained to us through Scripture and the Church Fathers.
