But at the time of the Passion, he had not yet received the fullness of what was coming at Pentecost.That should make us slower to judge him and quicker to be humble.The truth is, most of us do not really know how we would respond under the worst pressure, at the worst moment, with our own weakness fully exposed. Peter’s story is not there to make us feel superior. It is there to reveal the limits of self-reliance.Without the Holy Spirit, we should not be overly confident in ourselves.That is not a call to despair. It is a call to honesty. It is not a motivational boost. It is not a pep talk. It is divine empowerment.Twenty minutes earlier, this kind of boldness would have seemed impossible. After Pentecost, it becomes natural because the source has changed. They are no longer operating from their own limited courage. We keep our lives arranged around safety and control. We stay where the risks are low, where no one really needs anything from us, where our gifts never have to stretch into mission.The Holy Spirit is not given only for private reassurance. Discernment of charisms is not the only way to understand the action of the Holy Spirit, but it is a very practical way to identify how he is already active in your life and where he may be inviting you to step out in faith.For many people, the image of Pentecost is overwhelming because it feels like the only model of Spirit-filled life is public, dramatic, and highly visible. If “life in the Holy Spirit” means grabbing a microphone, speaking in multiple languages, and addressing a crowd, a lot of people are going to quietly retreat deeper into the upper room.That fear is understandable.But Pentecost should not be reduced to one outward expression for every person. The Holy Spirit is not limited to a single style of mission. He manifests himself in many ways, through many charisms, in many temperaments, for many forms of service.That is freeing.<h3 id="27221be3-42f0-445a-ac98-2acb84a97937" data-toc-id="27221be3-42f0-445a-ac98-2acb84a97937" style="font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.2;">The Holy Spirit does not call everyone to the same visible role</h3>Not every person is called to public speaking. Not every person is called to lead a ministry in the spotlight. Not every person is called to serve in a way that is obvious to everyone else.There are countless unique callings built from unique combinations of charisms.And this is one of the most encouraging truths in the whole conversation: your call will fit you.That does not mean it will always feel easy. It does not mean you will never be stretched. But it does mean God is not working against your humanity when he gifts you. He is working through the person he created you to be.Your temperament matters. Your desires matter. Your comfort zones are not the final authority, but neither are they irrelevant. The Holy Spirit’s action in your life will not be random. It will make sense in light of how God made you.<h2 id="15e51052-5400-401b-9c2f-543e57419bbd" data-toc-id="15e51052-5400-401b-9c2f-543e57419bbd" style="font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Staying fixated on the wrong expression can keep you stuck</h2>Sometimes people assume they must not be hearing the Holy Spirit because they do not feel drawn to the most public forms of ministry. But that may simply mean the Holy Spirit is calling them somewhere else.If all you can see is the expression of the Spirit that terrifies you, you may end up paralyzed.That is one of the enemy’s favorite tactics. Fix your attention on the one thing that feels impossible, then convince you that this impossible thing is the whole story. If public speaking terrifies you, then suddenly “being led by the Spirit” gets reduced to public speaking. If visible leadership feels unnatural, then “living boldly” gets reduced to visible leadership.But that is a lie.The Holy Spirit shows up in all kinds of ways. Public proclamation is real. So are hidden faithfulness, Spirit-led encouragement, generosity, service, teaching, wisdom, hospitality, mercy, and countless other forms of grace at work.When we understand that, the door of the upper room can start to open.<h2 id="b2c14fcd-07ca-4620-988b-26e5bd9f4d1a" data-toc-id="b2c14fcd-07ca-4620-988b-26e5bd9f4d1a" style="font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">A better question to ask</h2>Instead of asking, “Why don’t I want to do the thing that seems dramatic?” it can be much more fruitful to ask:<ul><li>How has the Holy Spirit already been active in my life?</li><li>Where do I notice grace bearing fruit for others?</li><li>What kind of service brings life, desire, and spiritual effectiveness together?</li><li>What door might God be asking me to unlock?</li></ul>Those questions move the conversation from comparison to discernment.And discernment is where freedom begins.<h2 id="806f8bef-25b1-4528-83fd-a07089a9119d" data-toc-id="806f8bef-25b1-4528-83fd-a07089a9119d" style="font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Peter’s story gives us hope for our own “before and after the Holy Spirit”</h2>The beauty of Peter’s story is not that he was naturally heroic. The beauty is that he was not. He was weak, impulsive, sincere, broken, and afraid. In other words, he was exactly the kind of person the Holy Spirit delights to transform.That should encourage every one of us.Before and after the Holy Spirit is not just Peter’s story. It is the pattern of Christian life.Before the Holy Spirit, we cling to control. After the Holy Spirit, we begin to live in surrender.Before the Holy Spirit, we define ourselves by our fear. After the Holy Spirit, we discover courage we did not manufacture.Before the Holy Spirit, our failures seem final. After the Holy Spirit, even our wounds can become places of encounter and mission.This is not about pretending we have no weakness. Peter never becomes someone with no history. Maybe you are faithful but guarded. Prayerful but risk-averse. Open to God in theory, but hesitant to let him move through your actual gifts.If so, the invitation is not necessarily to become louder. It is to become available.For some people, availability may indeed lead to a public and visible mission. For others, it may lead to a quieter but equally Spirit-filled form of service. The point is not to imitate someone else’s expression. The point is to let the Holy Spirit be made present in you through the gifts he has given you.That is no less real. No less needed. No less inspired.<h2 id="4409856e-e50c-4351-9de4-82050e9b4abe" data-toc-id="4409856e-e50c-4351-9de4-82050e9b4abe" style="font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">The Church needs every Spirit-given gift</h2>The Church does not only need apostles preaching in the street. The Church needs the full range of charisms God gives. It needs people whose gifts are public and people whose gifts are hidden. It needs visible leaders and quiet servants. It needs those who speak and those who strengthen, those who gather and those who intercede, those who teach and those who console.So if the dramatic image of Pentecost has made you hesitant because it seems too big, too public, or too unlike you, remember this: the same Holy Spirit who emboldened Peter also forms each member of the Body in a distinct way.He is not trying to erase who you are. He wants to fill who you are.And when that happens, the Church is built up exactly as God intends.<h2 id="f4c390f5-a7bf-40ba-b7da-80dadb0bdf25" data-toc-id="f4c390f5-a7bf-40ba-b7da-80dadb0bdf25" style="font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Final encouragement</h2>Pentecost is a celebration of divine fire, yes. But it is also a celebration of divine fit. God gives gifts with purpose. He empowers real people, with real personalities and real limitations, to participate in his mission.So when you think about before and after the Holy Spirit, do not stop with Peter’s dramatic change. Let it become a mirror.Where has fear kept you hidden?Where have you assumed that life in the Spirit has to look like someone else’s calling?Where might God be inviting you to unlock the door, trust the gifts he has given, and step into the particular mission prepared for you?The Holy Spirit wants to be made present in your life through who you are and through the gifts he has given you. Whether that expression is public or quiet, visible or hidden, widely recognized or known only to a few, it matters. It is valid. It is needed.That is the real promise of Pentecost. Not just that the apostles were changed, but that the same Spirit still transforms the Church, one person at a time.
