<p>If you've ever sat in a talk about the "gifts of the Holy Spirit" and slowly realized the speaker meant something different from what you learned in Confirmation prep, you've run into one of the most common vocabulary tangles in Catholic life. The Church uses "gifts of the Holy Spirit" for two related but genuinely different things — and once you see the difference, a whole shelf of Catholic teaching snaps into focus.</p>
<h2>The Short Answer</h2>
<p>*<em>The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to every Christian for their own holiness. Charisms are given in different combinations to each person for the good of </em>others<em>.</em>* Same Spirit, two different directions: the seven gifts flow inward to make you holy; charisms flow outward to build the Church and serve the world.</p>
<h2>The Seven Gifts: Given to All, For Your Holiness</h2>
<p>The seven gifts — wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord — come from Isaiah's prophecy of the Messiah (Isaiah 11:2–3). Every baptized Christian receives them, and Confirmation strengthens them (CCC 1830–1831). They perfect the virtues and make us responsive to the Holy Spirit's promptings.</p>
<p>Notice their shape: they're <em>dispositions of the soul</em>. Fortitude steadies you under trial; piety orders your heart toward God; fear of the Lord keeps you in awe of Him. They're standard equipment for the Christian life, and everyone gets the full set.</p>
<h2>Charisms: Given in Unique Combinations, For Everyone Else</h2>
<p>Charisms are different. The Catechism describes them as graces of the Holy Spirit which "directly or indirectly benefit the Church, ordered as they are to her building up, to the good of men, and to the needs of the world" (CCC 799). St. Paul lists examples across several letters — teaching, service, encouragement, giving, leadership, mercy, healing, administration, and more (Romans 12:6–8; 1 Corinthians 12:4–11, 28) — always with the same logic: "To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit" (1 Corinthians 12:7).</p>
<p>Their shape is different too: charisms are <em>abilities for mission</em>. Nobody receives all of them; everybody receives some of them, "whether extraordinary or simple and humble" (CCC 799–800). Your particular combination is part of how God tells you what your mission is.</p>

<h2>Why the Difference Matters</h2>
<p>Because the two gifts answer two different questions. The seven gifts answer <em>"how do I become holy?"</em> — and the answer is the same for all of us. Charisms answer <em>"what is my mission?"</em> — and the answer is different for every person in the pews.</p>
<p>When the two get blurred together, the practical result is that most Catholics never hear the second question at all. They assume the "gifts of the Holy Spirit" conversation ended at Confirmation, and no one ever tells them that the Holy Spirit has also given them a personal set of gifts that point to a personal mission. That's the gap charism discernment fills — and in our experience, discovering it is one of the most energizing moments in an adult Catholic's faith.</p>
<h2>So Which Do I Have?</h2>
<p>Both — that's the good news. You have all seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (thank your Baptism and Confirmation), and you have charisms in a combination unique to you. The seven gifts don't need discerning; the charisms do (CCC 801).
